Sambal Without Anchovies - Chua Kok Yee

1. "Every time he proposes a new idea to his father, he runs into a brick wall." Describe three incidents to justify the statement above. Refer closely to the text. (8m)

  • Hanif suggests to Pak Samad to change the way of cooking sambal
    • Hanif proposes that the sambal and anchovies to be cooked separately
    • With this method, the sambal can be refrigerated overnight and the anchovies will not turn soggy
    • As a result, wastage is reduced and profits increase
    • Pak Samad vehemently refuses because he insists that this new method will change the taste of the sambal
    • Hanif counters that all the other stalls do the same and Pak Samad gives up arguing

  • Hanif suggests to Pak Samad to sell nasi lemak without lining it with banana leaves
    • Hanif argues that selling nasi lemak without banana leaves can save costs and increase profits
    • He also states that the customers don't care about the banana leaves
    • Pak Samad rejects the idea for the sake of tradition and nostalgia
    • He adds that he doesn't need the extra profits

  • Hanif suggests to Pak Samad to better furnish the nasi lemak stall
    • Hanif wants Pak Samad to give the stall a new coat of paint as well as changing some tables and chairs
    • Pak Samad once again refuses

2. Which character in the short story 'Sambal Without Anchovies' do you consider a good role model? Give evidence from the text. (8m)

In the short story 'Sambal Without Anchovies', I consider the character Nora to be a good role model.

  • Nora acts as the mediator between Hanif and Pak Samad
    • Both men are stubborn and short-tempered
      • She is willing to understand and listen to both men without being biased
    • She also reduces the level of tension between both men
      • She changes the topic of conversation to the children's school project when Hanif wants to talk about a new business proposal(banana leaves)
  • Nora is a very likeable person
    • Nora is well-liked by Pak Samad, her father-in-law
    • Pak Samad likes her so much that he turns to his daughter-in-law than to his own son for help with fetching the banana leaves
  • Nora is a sensitive and perceptive person
    • She was able to see the reason for Pak Samad's continued reluctance to make changes to the stall and Hanif's continued insistence to impose his ideas upon his father
    • She also managed to heal the relationship between father and son
      • She convinced Hanif that proving himself to his father is not as important as preserving his father's memories of his mother

    1. The son's mistake was making assumptions on his father and not understanding him. This is the source of all their conflict and unhappiness.

So if the son were to show more love to his father, all he has to do is to reverse his mistakes to give his father happiness instead! You can figure out the rest ;)

  3. Pak samad is obviously want to live in the memory of his late wife..that's why he wants to leave the stall as it is..notice all the symbolism embedded in the story by using the old pots and pans,by lining the plate with the banana leaves .the stall itself..how sambal is cooked together with the anchovies... all these r keeping the memories of Pak Samad n his late wife..and who r we to take that memory from him..not even his own son..respect ppl's memory..
The title itself 'sambal without anchovies' symbolises Pak Samad's life without his late wife's as the main ingredient in Nasi lemak...as a husband without his wife..is taken away from his life..his main support system..anyway..what is Nasi lemak without sambal🙃
    The title 'sambal without
